The name you sing under is the one called out and shown on the screen. There are two places you can change it, and they behave differently on purpose.
Between shows
In your account, on your profile page. Type the new one and save. It is checked against the same rules a name at a show is: nothing that would embarrass a room.
That is your name from then on, and it fills itself in the next time you join a show.
During a live show
Ask on the request page, and the KJ approves it.
That is not us being awkward. Mid show, your old name is already on the big screen, already in the rotation, and possibly already halfway out of the KJ's mouth. So the request goes to their approval queue with everything else, your page keeps showing your current name, and a banner tells you it is waiting.
When the KJ approves, everything switches at once: the rotation, the screen, and the songs you have queued. If they decline, you keep the name you had.
Why a name gets refused
Names that are only punctuation or nonsense, and names that would get the KJ in trouble with the venue. Hosts can also block particular names in their own room. None of it is personal, and picking something else takes a second.
The name in your account
Your account can also carry a display name, which is what you see when you log in. The singer name is the public one, the one for the room.
